Things that concern us10

What we would ask about, check, or price into the deal.

Look closerApr 2026

Left engine compression has dropped across annuals

Compression readings were 78/80 on all cylinders on 2022-06-21 and 2023-08-17. On 2025-02-01 they were 72, 73, 72, 72, 74 and 74 /80. On 2026-04-15 they were 68, 70, 68, 70, 70 and 70 /80. No oil analysis or borescope report was supplied.

Look closerApr 2026

Right engine annual entry has no airworthiness statement

The 2026-04-15 right engine annual entry lists compressions (70, 70, 70, 76, 76, 76 /80 at 9.2 SOH), plugs and an oil change. It does not say the engine was found airworthy and lists no discrepancies. The left engine entry for the same date does carry the statement.

Current weight and balance not in the records

The latest weight and balance provided is dated 2020-11-05 with empty weight 3410.41 lb, up from 3365.55 lb in 1977-03. The 2025-02 annual says discrepancies in the weight and balance report were corrected and a new report added. A new weight and balance was prepared 2025-01-30 (GI275 install) and revised 2026-04-15 (air pumps removed). Those documents are not in the pages provided. Past entries give empty weight plus useful load of 5300 lb (3371.5 + 1928.5 in 1973, 3381.2 + 1918.8 in 1983). Verify the current empty weight, useful load and equipment list.

Throttle warning switches not confirmed rigged

The 2025-02-07 annual entry says both replaced throttle warning switches still need rigging to manifold pressure determined in flight. The 2026-04-15 annual entry records adjusting the left engine gear warning horn switch to actuate. No entry confirms the right switch.

Look closerFeb 2026

Right engine baffling in poor condition, repair declined

The 2026-02-10 installation entry for the overhauled right engine states baffling is in poor condition and the customer declined repair. The 2026-04-15 annual entry does not mention baffle repair. A D'Shannon baffle kit was installed on the left engine 2022-05.

AD compliance lists disagree and no full airframe list is in the records

The left engine AD list (2021-11-29) shows 86-13-04 R3, 95-03-14, 81-19-03, 93-10-82, 99-19-01 and 2012-06-06. The right engine list (2025-11-24) shows 88-13-04 R3, 85-03-14, 91-19-03, 93-10-02, 99-18-01 and 2012-03-06. The 2004-08 annual refers to an AD compliance record in a separate folder, and the 2008-11 and 2009-11 annuals state 'all ADs complied with' without a list. Request the current AD compliance report for the airframe, both engines and both propellers.

Right propeller has no overhaul entry and its logged times do not reconcile

The propeller was installed new in 1993 (hub EB3410A, 1993-03-26). Its log pages show no overhaul. Logged times were 1965.6 TSMOH on 2017-12-16 and 2431.1 on 2023-08-17, the same figures that appear in the left engine and left propeller logs. The 2025-02-01 entry lists TTSN 340.6 for both propellers, which equals the left engine TSOH on that date. Time since overhaul of this propeller cannot be determined from the records.

Look closerApr 2023

Left engine failed in flight 2023-01, 156.9 tach hours after overhaul

The owner account (ABS Magazine, 2023-06) describes abnormal oil consumption, smoke from the left spinner, and an emergency landing at Taos NM. It reports a #6 connecting rod failure with a hole in the case, and a cause of a missing camshaft oil plug (Continental manufacturing defect) that went undetected through four oil changes and an annual. The logs show S/N 684240 removed 2023-01-27 and rebuilt by Western Skyways 2023-03-28, and reinstalled 2023-04-06. The rebuild used a replacement crankshaft, crankcase and camshaft, two overhauled connecting rods (#5 and #6) and two new cylinders (#5 and #6). The engine was run in a test cell. The article says the engine was replaced, while the logs show the same serial number rebuilt and reinstalled. Hours since overhaul were not reset: TSO 167.5 at reinstall and 509.0 SMOH on 2026-10-12, both counted from the 2021-11 overhaul.

Look closerApr 2023

Left propeller replaced 2023-04 with unit of unknown time and overhaul

Western Skyways installed 'overhauled' propeller S/N EB8411A on 2023-04-06, entered as total time unknown, TSO 0, with no overhaul shop or date. The original left propeller serial is EB3411A. Johnson Propeller Ent. overhauled a propeller 2022-01-05 (W.O. 021-502), and the log does not say which serial that was.
